Founded in 1870,Opobo is an important town in Rivers State. The city-state was founded by the legendaryKing Jaja of Opobo, who moved from Bonny to the present settlement, near Ikot Abasi in Cross River State.

Since then, the town has grown in size and population. As a kingdom, Opobo is made up of several islands and  communities, including Opobo town, Queenstown, Kalasunju, Oloma, Ayaminimah, Illoma, Minimah, Okpukpo, Iwoma, Ekereborokiri, Kalaibiama and  Epellema.
Presently, accessible mainly by the sea, there is joy that the Nyesom Wike administrationhas advanced the Unity road to the point where Opobo people can drive home. Opobo is the headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
