Founded in 1882 and located the coastline, the Island town of Abonnema (also known as Nyemoni) is one of the major towns in Rivers State.
Abonnema was discovered by an expedition of chiefs from Elem kalabari. There are four major compounds that make up the town namely; Manuel (Owukori), Briggs (Oruwari), Georgewill (Otagi), and Jack (Iju).
Head chiefs preside over these family compounds and the Amanyanabo of Abonnema heads the whole town. Abonnema grew to be a flourishing major Nigerian seaport during the colonial era and was host to many European companies, including the Royal Niger Company, which changed its name to United African Company (UAC).
Today, Abonnema is the headquarters of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. It is one of the fastest growing towns in Rivers State with modern buildings, roads and development infrastructure. Although a costal city with a costal economy, Abonnema is linked to other parts of the state by road.
